my sister loves
pailin-mined sapphires
and emeralds set
in pendants and rings
bright and shiny things
i never understood

but watching our avocado tree’s
sunlit leaves fluttering
against the clear blue sky
i can at least appreciate
how truly precious
that color combination can be
